School Leaders' Retreat 2020, Paro, Bhutan

School Leaders' Retreat 2020, Paro, Bhutan

The School Leaders' Retreat is a programme for school leaders for discussions and common learning experiences to build a foundation of shared values and create a network of leaders in the Asia-Pacific community.

Background: Asia Pacific Schools Initiative - Leadership through Serene Strength

The Asia-Pacific Schools Initiative (APSI), a bouquet of educational programmes organized by Centre for Escalation of Peace, aims to instill in the participants ‘Leadership through Serene Strength’ in order to promote peace and harmony in the countries in the Asia-Pacific region. It is the strength of serenity and tranquility that should drive the leaders to meet the challenges, and the APSI programmes work towards building that Serene Strength with all stakeholders in the education space.

Our endeavour with the youth is to create a network of future leaders, developing and nurturing in each one of them the capacity to exercise ‘Leadership through Serene Strength’. Students and teachers from different countries in the Asia-Pacific region participate in a bi-annual programme that lasts 10 - 12 months. We have successfully conducted two editions of APSI in 2017 and 2019.

The School Leaders’ Retreat is a programme that brings together school leaders with the same intent of inculcating an understanding of ‘Leadership through Serene Strength’ and inspiring them to support the students and teachers of their schools.  We believe that if schools practice and promote ‘Leadership through Serene Strength’, it will have a multiplier effect and will spread in the community, country and region. The young students who understand and practice this will be the change-makers when they grow up into positions of leadership and the teachers and school leaders would be the facilitators of that transformation. After an impressive beginning in 2018, we announce the School Leaders’ Retreat 2020.

The programme addresses the unique challenges of a school leader in the complex and fast-changing world of learning. Designed specifically for school heads, the programme equips participants with ideas, skills and practices to create and lead collaborative result-oriented teams with Serene Strength.

As a part of this programme, a workshop on leadership focuses on distinguishing technical and adaptive challenges in running a school, creating alignment and commitment among team members, and nurturing a  win-win mindset. Using the experiential learning approach, the workshop will include engaging activities, reflection, sharing and discussions to co-create insights and learning.

Interaction with eminent Bhutanese personalities is also woven into the programme.
